Image Slider: The Michael's Chapel in Kiedrich

The illustrated St. Michael's Chapel is a Gothic church in the small town of Kiedrich in the Rheingau. Built in the first half of the 15th century, the chapel, with its rich and noble designs, is a special example of Gothic architecture in Germany. This building still attracts architecturally interested travellers to Kiedrich. In the 19th century, architect and vedutist Domenico Quaglio the Younger. (1787-1837) and architect Friedrich August Stüler(1800-1865) travelled to the Rheingau independently of each other and drew up views of the church building – as oil paintings (Quaglio, 1826) and watercoloured pencil drawings (Stüler, 1857). When comparing the two church views, small differences are noticeable in the church building: While Stüler’s drawing attempts to grasp the building in its true proportions and building elements, Quaglio allows himself more freedom. Can you find the differences?
