New forms of masculinity
The end of World War I challenged the previous image of manhood. Masses of soldiers now looking for work streamed through the streets of the big cities. Often, their wounds were visible. The horrors of World War I left many men traumatized. The photos illustrate different reactions to this change. Some continue to draw a heroic image of manhood, others explore masculinity anew: The idea of a man who was willing to fight, willing to sacrifice, and strong was no longer tenable. The juxtaposition of the motifs explored in this gallery, reflect a changing society that had to find a new way of dealing with men and masculinity.
