Already in the 5th century BC the philosopher Protagoras had to admit: “As for the gods, I can say neither that they exist nor that they do not exist. For many things hinder knowledge: both the darkness of the object and the brevity of human life." Regardless of the existence of gods, which could not be clarified even then, they had a firm place in ancient cult practice as well as in the Roman-Greek mythological world.
